Roland "Rich" G. Richmond, III

Cremation Rites have been held for Roland Grant “Rich” Richmond, III, 78, of Sitkum (Myrtle Point), Oregon under the direction of Nelson's Bay Area Mortuary.


Roland Grant “Rich” Richmond, III, was born May 11, 1945 at Newburyport Massachusetts, the son of Roland and Violet ( Watters) Richmond, II, and raised and educated in Amesbury, MA. After graduating from Amesbury High School he enlisted in the Navy and served four years on aircraft carriers as a jet mechanic, he served on the Corral Sea and another aircraft carrier during Viet Nam & spent some time in the Philippines. After the Navy he went to college and earned a degree in metallurgy. He had his own welding business for a while. He went to work on a Navy research vessel as First mate on the ship that transported and deployed the Navy's two-man submarines, the Turtle and the Sea Cliff.


After retiring he married Suzy (Hollis) , they were married for 38 years. He enjoyed riding and rebuilding his vintage 1951 Pan Head Harvey Davidson in California. Roland and Suzy moved to Sitkum, OR. They both loved Oregon, and have enjoyed the rural life with chickens, goats, gardening and a great community. He joined the Dora/Sitkum fire department both as a driver, and he served 12 years on the fireboard.


He is survived by his wife, Suzy Richmond, a stepson William Shaffer and grandson William Shaffer both of Myrtle Point, A grand daughter, Emily Shaffer of New York, and his sister, Virginia Johnson from Amesbury, Mass. He was preceded in death by his half-sister Miriam who died several years ago.
